The Kelly's, Post Office and other Directories were very much like today's Yellow Pages. They contained a list of all the businesses and trades people located in a village, along with details of the local gentry, landowners, charities and facilities.
The extracts below are the main pages from these directories for Great Bradley With the exception of the 1870sDirectory, all of these directories can be viewed in full on the University of Leicester's searchable database of historical directories at www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp KELLY'S DIRECTORY OF SUFFOLK, 1859 Samuel Collett is shown as running the Fox & Goose, but Richard Paxman kept the Crown Pub. John Crosby, Surgeon lived on the Brinkley Road in Carlton. Hanslip Nice operated the windmill and was the enumerator for the census. Stephen Plumb and family have significant graves in the north west part of the graveyard. William Nice was running the Great Bradley estate. Hanslip Long would take over the Great Bradley farm from William Nice. Josiah Nice is running the windmill and the census. His was a tragic story Ellen Plumb took over the running the shop and post office after her father, Stephen, died in 1880. Although, not a post office the building is still there and to see Ellen's grave Daniel Kent Long was now living in Great Bradley Hall and running the estate. John Wilder was in his last year the rector. We have some of his memoirs. The school (now the Village Hall) opened in 1880.
