KENNEL COTTAGES & HART WOOD
Two pairs of 1950s semi-detached properties make up numbers 1 - 4 Kennel Cottages along with the larger house now called Hart Wood. The houses are so-named because kennels for the hounds of the local hunt were. Hart Wood was the home of the Kennelman and is named after the woodland to the rear of the property, called Hart Wood. The hunt kennels were built around 1886 under the direction of the then Master of the Hunt Mr. E. Molyneux, after the Newmarket & Thurlow Hunt was established in 1884 (although there had been a hunt in the area for over 100 years). Hounds remained there until 1970 when the hunt amalgamated with the Puckeridge Hunt.
The hounds were moved to Brent Pelham near Bishops Stortford and the kennels were sold. In 1985 new kennels were built at Wadgells Farm, Great Thurlow and 30 hounds were moved from the kennels at Brent Pelham and joined by 40 from the North Warwickshire.
The names of the hunts have changed over the years and you can find a more history at https://www.thethurlows.org.uk/little-thurlow-2000/the-thurlow-hunt/. The current hunt is known as the Thurlow Hunt an there is information about it at https://www.thurlowhunt.co.uk/about/history
