Thurlow Road
The houses on Thurlow Road/ Spring Barn Cottages are at the southern end of the village on the way to Thurlow. They have an odd numbering system: The furthest house to the main village, called Spring Barn Cottage, was converted in the 1970's from two semi-detached cottages built about 1870; they were previously known as 189a & 189b. Next to it is is number 188a & 188b. The numbers 188 & 189 were the number that the cottages had on the estate register (number 186 & 187 are at the top of Hall Road opposite the formr Fox Pub about 1/4 mile away). The main group of houses are numbered 1 - 8 Spring Barn Cottages, and were built in the 1930's. Number 1 is next to number 188a and is furthest from the village! Two further houses were built in the 1950's and these are known as New Cottages. Number 1 closest to the village in this case!
It is reported that a Mr Ling, father of John & Freddie Ling, tried to comit suicide by jumping down the well in Spring Barn Cottage (when it was number 189b). His jacket caught on the beam part of the way down the well - which saved him.
Spring Barn cottages are named after the springs that exist in the area and there is a well in the grounds of Spring Barn Cottage as well as Spring Barn itself. The barn is an open dutch barn, built in about 1910. For more on the actual barn see here: Spring Barn Information
Beyond the village sign, towards Thurlow are two pairs of semi-detached houses and a larger house Although the houses are the Thurlow side of the village sign they are still in Great Bradley, although estate agents ref to them as being in Thurlow. The buildings were associated with kennels for hounds for the local hunt, which were in the woods behind the houses.
